I've had my house for 4 months the first two months I used 17000 gallons of water and the next next two month I use 39,000 gallons of water. Something is wrong. In 24 hrs the meter said 750 gallons was used. With the water cut off at the house the meter still turns. It's no sign of water in the yard and I dug at the meter to check the connection at the meter. Could it be a bad meter or do I need to just run a new line from the meter to the house.

FIRST:
Make SURE the shut off valve at the house actually closes 100% !
Open the piping immediately after the valve (cut in a tee for 'future').
If 100% sure leak is between meter and home, you will need to either
repair
or
replace
'main' line to home
Depending on 'depth of burial' a leak detection specialty company may be in order.

meters can ONLY register water flowing through them. I sandy/loose soil water may NEVER show up on the surface, depending on how deep it is buried. Depending on the material, such as copper or PVC, it should be repairable. Galvanized or blue polybutylene piping almost always has to be replace

Call you water company and let them know of your new found issues. They may help you with future billing.
Contact a licensed plumber, that knows water service issues. Is your sewer bill based on your water useage? If so, make sure you don't get charged the extra amounts.
Best Wishes

Thanks. When it's off at the house nothing comes out of faucets so it's off. It's pvc pipe but it's 300 feet from meter to house . Would be hard to find the leak.. water company will adjust last month's bill though.

well if some of the PVC is failing now maybe you do want to start thinking about a repipe with perhaps long PEX runs to avoid fittings. But if your main line did leak so much water I would think that should be able to find it. How deep is the water main anyway? grab a shovel and do some investigation.

Pvc will normally break at either end where it transitions to copper, (this is the problem 95% of the time), or a a turn somewhere in the middle. Very seldom in a straight run. A leak locator could pinpoint it so a plumber could repair it.

The pipe coming from the meter is about 18 inches deep. It's not leaking there. I had a home inspector probe the yard from house to meter and he used 2 rods that were pulling towards each other and he flagged where the pipe was but no water buildup. Unless the water is flowing in a septic drain.
