 Gasket size for slipjoint

Very Basic question

I have a brass 1 1/2 inch tailpiece that attaches to a 1 1/2 inch brass waste arm..
I know I need a rubber washer but the sizing is confusing?

1) mostly I see 1 1/4 X 1 1/2 is that the correct size?
If not what is?

2) square cut or the beveled?
( here are the red beveled ones, not sure if these would work [www.amazon.com])

(I was sold one of those white plastic rings and it is not doing the trick, so I thought I'd get the info b4 going to the plumbing store this time)

any help appreciated

It depends on what KIND of tailpiece it is and whether it is going into or against the waste arm. Take it to the supply house so they can see what you are trying to do and can give you the correct gasket.

I already took it to the plumbing store and they gave me a plastic washer
that doesn't work. On the net I found out that rubber washers are required for metal pipes.

I'd like to get the size straight to avoid another problem

The Tailpiece slips INTO the waste arm...
I thought they all worked that way, sorry I didn't clarify...

any other thoughts?

An 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" rubber washer such as the ones you picture will work. Square or bevel doesn't really matter. I prefer the bevel (with a little silicone on the outside edge).

The surface of the fitting that has the threads determines whether to use a tapered or square washer. If the mating surface is flat, use a square rubber washer, if there is a taper, use a tapered nylon washer.

Just ask for an 1 1/2" (nominal) slip joint gasket.
