Slow Leak in Kitchen Faucet. Usually just a washer only?
Author: JamesAA (CA)

An older lady and friend of the family wants me to help her with her slow leaky faucet in kitchen. I haven't seen it yet.

Typically will a washer alone suffice or will I need to get her a new sink? Does the water, with all the small rocks, over the years ruin the faucet, making it not work properly?

Also if it is just a washer replacement, will I still have to go under the cabinet and disconnect the faucet to get to the washer?

Thanks,
James

You need to see the faucet. Back in the good old days, a plumber could pack a small tackle box with assorted washers, graphite cord, etc. and fix just about any faucet up and down the street. Nowdays, there are so many different types of faucets, cartridges, o rings, spring seals, single handle faucets, diverters and sprayers that a plumber would have to haul a trailer full of parts to fix anything out there. ;o

If it does have a washer, they tend to deteriorate from wear and tear of repeated operation. Whatever the cause, usually there is a set of shut off supply valves under the sink that can be closed off, and usually the faucet can be repaired from the top-side of the sink, once it is taken apart and the problem identified. Post a picture if you have questions.

Unless you are a professional "mind-reader" you don't know what kind of faucet you are going to "try to repair" Some faucets... don't have washers. You may end up burning a lot of expensive gas as you navigate thru the process. Besides, you have your own issue with a clogged drain.....

Best Wishes

YOu may do her a favor by NOT trying to fix it. From your question, it is obvious you have not fixed many faucets and you could damage hers and THEN she would need a new faucet, but NOT a new sink.
