Hi, thanks in advance for any advice. I'm replacing my mom's tub spout. however there's some sort of old plastic adapter that doesn't show up in any pictures I can find in the instructions or on the internet for replacing the tub spout; it doesn't come off. should I break it off or can I install the new adapter on top of this? Is there a recommended way to break it?
Thanks!

It either slides off or there is an Allen screw on the bottom holding it.

Couldn't find either. Used a hacksaw. Thanks though. Project successful!

Glad to hear it, but the "adapter" either had to be secured somehow or should have just slid off.

tub spout unscrews as from a 1/2 inch pipe in the wall or has an allen screw at the very bottom close to the wall and the pipe slides off
