Rust under clamp
Author: Yosemitesam (CA) What happens to a pipe if you repair a leak, caused by rust with a pipe clamp without cleaning the rusted area, without treating it with any type of Calcium Lime & or Rust Remover first. Will the rust eat thru the pipe anyway while there is a clamp in place.

Author: steve (CA) The rust will continue. Removing the existing rust and not coating the exposed metal, to prevent contact with water and oxygen will not stop the rust.

Author: Paul48 (CT) Depending on the situation, it may be a temporary repair no matter what you do to prep it. Unless it is an isolated rusty area, you can expect more leaks. The only cure is to replace the pipe.

Author: hj (AZ) It will do it any way, regardless of anything you do on the surface. Rust works from the inside. The clamp should be large enough to cover any further deterioration at THAT place, but there are usually dozens of other places it is going to leak if it hasn't already.
