 Leaky urinal spud.
Author: Mr. M. (Non-US)

I just installed a Mansfield 401 urinal in my Man Cave. It is brand new as well as the P-trap.
The leak is at the bottom spud. I guess it's not tight enough? I tightened it twice already with large channel lock pliers. I thought the rubber would create a good seal with moderate force...?
I'm worry that if it tighten anymore, the china will crack. I also noticed upon installation that
the bottom hole was slightly oval.
Please advise.

Thanks

Mr. M.

Does the urinal comply with local codes there? Here, it does not because all urinals must have an integral trap. Try taking the spud back out, wipe it down dry, and reinstall it. You'll be repositioning it, and it may seal the second time.

sometimes it has to have an oval opening so the spud can be inserted. The seal is caused by the "flat lip" against the surface of the urinal. It would be extremely difficult to crack the urinal by overtightening the spud.

That urinal does not have a trap, so one must be added with a longer tailpiece. What are you using for a flush device? I believe you need a 3/4 X 1 spud gasket and friction ring.

Well I removed the spud, dried it and re-installed it...Same thing, still leaks...
I repeated this step 3 times and finally, it seated properly and stopped leaking.
I think I also tightened more than on my previous attempts. Either way, it's fixed.

Thanks everyone.

As for meeting code, I purchased this urinal at a local distributor so I assume that it does meet code as it is still sold here. BTW, I'm in Western Canada.

You may consider returning it for another since you stated that the outlet is ovaled and that is probably where the problem lies.

I've seen those very same urinals covered with silicone and paint to keep them dry. Hoping that the install included a p-trap. That is included in the instruction manual.
