Hello -- In the ladies showers at my gym, there is a strange phenomenon in all 5 stalls. They are single handle controls that have been manipulated to only move about half of the way. OK, what do I mean by that? Well, at home my single handle shower moves easily 180 degrees as you switch from Cold to Hot. These gym shower handles have been "locked" (?) somehow to allow a much smaller turning radius. That would be okay if the water *pressure* and the water *temperature* were not now inextricably linked. You get in, turn the lever on and the water could boil a lobster. To avoid scalding, you turn handle to the right get cooler water -- but as you do that, the water pressure gets less and less. To take a show that doesn't boil you alive, you must take a "dribble shower" (still pretty darn warm!) where you are practically forced to press yourself against the wall directly under the shower head to get the soap off! I've complained but they have done nothing. It's the strangest thing. The next time I complain I'd like to offer up some solutions because, honestly, the guys at the front desk just do not care one bit about the ladies locker room. Thank you.

The temperature limiting feature is why the handles only go part way. The pressure balancing spools are stuck on the cold side shutting off the cold water which is why the water stays hot. Replacing the spool varies according to the make and model of the valve.

Talk to management or somebody with an ownership interest.
If they don't respond, contact local public health or plumbing inspection authorities to find out if the club is subject to regulations requiring that they fix the problem.
Or, start looking for a new club.

even if it were not a violation of the health codes, which it is, they should do it to prevent lawsuits from scalding.

Send management of the gym a registered letter informing them of the dangerous condition. That should get their attention.

Thank you all so much. In the past I sent an email to their main office and while they responded immediately, you could tell it was a canned response. A few days later I got a "How'd We Do?" type email. That's why I decided to contact this forum so I could have some idea what the issue could be -- although I should not have needed to, I know.
I wondered who I should notify who might
1.) have a financial interest, or
2.) be some kind of regulatory body.
Unfortunately, I stumped myself at OSHA (which would only work if I were an employee of the gym and had to take lobster showers as part of the job).
Anyway, thanks for all the advice. I will push this forward.
