So I am a pro, just not a pro plumber. I've done painting and resto work on motorcycles and homes for a long time, figured I could tackle redoing my own bath. now the learning curve issues...
Everything came out beautifully, but I have no handles in my shower so far. I'm starting to think I should have replaced them before putting the wall and tile up...
the old handles, escutcheons, etc are Kohler, the splines inside the handles are completely stripped. they are also looking quite rough and want replacing, except for the diverter handle which still looks ok. the stem splines are a bit worn, but still have some tooth left, they might still work.
the new wall leaves a gap <.5 in. (pic). the old wall was thicker and had a thick surround, so now the handle escutcheons and faucet are hanging out a bit.
questions:
can I replace my handles with a different brand by just replacing the stems with a stem with matching splines? or will the stems not line up on the other end as well? (the gf wants the old fashioned white porcelain cross style ones that look like mickey mouse hands)
the escutcheon has a threaded shaft inside, its too gummed up to see whats going on, but I'm thinking this should be adjustable to account for variances in length of shaft? true? or do i need to find shorter stems for all to match up. my other idea is just using some type of trim ring to take up the space to the wall. anyone done this? do they make something that does this?
there is access(very tight) to behind the wall from underneath in the basement, so worst case I can replace it all without cutting the wall, but I would really rather not if possible.
the stems have 19 splines and are 2.5 inches in terms of the exposed shaft, going back to the hex nut, they are 3.5 inches, haven't removed yet, so not sure the exact length. see pics for details.
I am inclined to just replace the handles with the same(assuming they are available), hope the stems are ok, and put some type of trim ring in there to fill the gap. but my gf would be pretty excited if I could get the handles she likes to match the rest of the room. so any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Just unscrew the 'nipple' from the escutcheon and cut it to fit what you need.
