 Level mortar shower pan
Author: BSKC62 (MO)

My husband used one of the quick pitch goof proof shower floors and somehow it ended up level. He discovered when he started to put the tile down. How does he fix it now so that it drains correctly. Please help!

add another ring and more tapered sticks. then use a long shank drain to screw into the shower drain base. this will add about 1 1/2 inches to the floor height so the curb may need to be raised as well.

Looking at the pictures of the unit he may have used, it is hard to visualize how it could have come out level if they were used correctly. So I guess the real question is, how did he manage to "goof up" a "goof proof" unit. How about a picture of what you have.

I wish I knew because we are on a time crunch for an appraisal and he was so frustrated thought he was going to have a heart attack. Also probably not an option to add another layer.

He is at work so I went in there myself and it does have fall from the corners but then becomes level from the drain back about 10 inches. Should we just forget about it an put the tile down.

Is this an onsite made mortar floor, screeded with a tool to give the pitch? You can use a medium bed mortar to set the tiles and adjust the mortar thickness as needed to provide the pitch.

That would be hard to do unless he bent the ribs. The only cure is to add a layer sloping from the drain up to the walls. You need a good material that will bond and not crack even when it is a very thin layer.

The screeds were the tapered ribs that were installed from the center drain ring to the edges, which means it should have been difficult, or impossible, to NOT have pitch all the way. Unless the drain fitting was high and the mortar was "raised" to meet it.
