 Help with cartridge/stem removal
Author: Peteglynn (CA)

Hi all- I have an two handle hot and cold cartridge faucet. I took the handle off but now I'm having difficulty removing the locking nut/ring I think it's called. I can't get a wrench around it because of the plate trim. Can someone please give me guidance.

Help is very much appreciated .

A "cowbell" deep well socket should work.
If not grip the chrome trim ring down low next to the tub surface, its much stronger there and won't crush or crack.

I'll take another look at perhaps using a deep weell socket but I think the old brass stem may just be too long to allow it. I'll also see if I can get under the trim from the bottom and force it up. I tried last night an it just feels frozen. We just moved in to the house a few months ago but it looks like a very old fixture

It is a Pfister faucet. Do not worry about removing the chrome trim. Just use a 5/8" deep socket on the hex part and turn the socket with pliers or a wrench.

Yes, I believe it is an old Pfister hot and cold faucet. Should I just break the trim off then? I was trying to reuse the fixture part and just replace the cartridge since that's where the leak appears to be

I just tried the 5/8 deep socket an it does not reach the nut. The stem is maybe a half inch to long. Any other ideas?

Don't do anything to it. Just use the socket to remove the stem unit. It will come out without you touching the chrome trim piece.

It will, you may need a 1/2" drive deep socket so the stem will come through the opening, are you trying to use a 3/8" drive socket with a ratchet? You have to let the stem come through the opening and turn the socket with a pair of pliers.

Gotcha, that should work. I don't have the 1/2 inch socket but a quick trip should take care of that. Will update after I pick up the socket

Bingo! 1/2 inch Deep socket dropped right over the stem and into the nut. Was able to get it off fairly easy from there! Thank you so very much for the help!
