I think the valve stem was old, as i took it out in the grooves that you screw back in to the wall, just inside of the washer, appeared to have a gap in it. so i figured i'd just put it back in and leave it for the night. well as i was screwing it back into the wall, now that threaded part is stuck in there with no way to grab it to unscrew it out. how can i get this out so i can buy a new stem to put in there?

M is right - a word is worth 1/1000th of a picture. But I do carry 1/2" deep sockets (automotive style) on the truck for situations like that. I can turn them with a pipe wrench.

YOur description does not give us any information about the make and model of the faucet, and we would need that, and probably a photo also, to determine exactly what the problem is.
