Bathtub overflow not working, but tub drains fine
Author: mt_100 (MI)

I have two bathrooms in my house, both identical. The one in the master bath works fine, and when water gets to the overflow it drains out, and does so pretty much as fast as the tub fills.

The guest bath, that my 3 year old uses however is odd. The tub fills and drains fine, taking about three minutes or so to drain the full tub. It does not backup water, the sink and toilet in the same bathroom are fine.

The problem is that the overflow doesn't work. I can fill the tub past the overflow, and hear a small trickle of water but not enough to actually be effective. Every so often an air bubble or two will pop out but nothing major.

The overflow covers are both the same, chrome covers that screw on to the overflow pipe with an opening on the bottom.

I have snaked down the overflow, no obstructions and made it three feet in. The tub drains at what I would call a normal rate and with only 2" left in it gets the "whirlpool" in it.

My home is two years old and new construction.

Any ideas?

When you snaked thru the overflow did you remove the O/F plate? If you did maybe the outlet at the bottom of the O/F cover plate is capped or obstructed.

Yes, I removed the plate which consists of the chromed plastic cover with the opening in the bottom, and the black ring that screws onto the threaded PCV pipe.

I cannot for the life of me figure it out. The water will slowly go down the overflow pipe but not like it should.

I have put a small camera down the overflow pipe and it is wide open, nothing obstructing it all the way to where it connects to the mail drain (about 1' of course).

Re: Bathtub overflow not working, but tub drains fine, AIR-LOCK ?
Author: Rocky56 (FL)

I have the same problem! The tub was left running one day and it overflowed, causing $$$$ damage to our apartment a 3 below us.

This perplexed me so I filled it up to the top of the overflow and NOTHING is draining out through the overflow.

Like the OP, the centre drain works fine.

I did notice that when I went to drain the water, it was like an air-lock blew and it did start to drain a bit through the overflow.

Could this be an air-lock problem? And next question, what to do about it?

Thanks in advance...

JP
