I just put in an 80 gal heat pump water heater. the man had one 66 heater in the attic and that leaked out and one 66 in the garage. neither hot branch was connected.
I sold him an a 80 gallon and but it in the garage. I had to connect both hot branches and then run a half inch return loop back to heater (about 160ft both ways). I used a pump with timer, checks on hot return and cold.
the water heater had no recirc ports so I connected the return back into the cold (side loop style) so that's one question if I could have done it better? also how long should the timer on the pump be set for? I don't want to wear out the water heater. also I ran the lines in wirsbo pex so hope they don't over heat

Mine is piped to return to the bottom drain, using a brass nipple and tee. But I have a gravity system. Probably does not matter that much with a pumped system.
