 Loud Vacuum Breaker
Author: jerryk1234 (CA)

Hello,

I have a relatively new house located at the bottom of a hill. Up my hill I have a lot of baby fruit trees and grapevines. These are served by a drip irrigation system with about 60 emitters. The top of the hill is about 40 feet above the level of the house. The drip irrigation system is fed by the hose bib at the back of the house, with one of those little 3/4" brass vacuum breakers.

When the drip irrigation system runs, the vacuum breaker makes a terrible moaning sound. This resonates throughout the house. I replaced the breaker with a brand new one - same sound.

I'm suspecting that this monster drip system is just more than that vacuuum breaker can handle, and I really need something more elaborate. But I hesitate to spend a whole lot of money on it, because the whole mess is going away. From the house water, at least. We have a 19th century dug well on the property, and we plan to restore it, drop a solar well pump down there, and irrigate the lot with it.

Anybody with suggestions?

For now, the sound is resolved. I relocated the vacuum breaker from the hose bib to the output of the little irrigation timer. Ahh, quiet!
