Last night I was in a bind and used a 1/2" female coupling along with a 1/2" nipple to extend my bathtub spout connection a little further out from the wall. I later realized it was black gas pipe instead of galvanized. Will this be an issue? Thank u!

yes
the preferred material is brass
however
brass is $$$$$
so make a 'filler piece' using 2 Cu adapters and a short piece

After a few weeks, you'll get a dose of brown rusty water every time you turn the tub on.

As always... Thank you for the advice! Like I said,it was late and that's all I had and later realized what I did. How long you think before the black pipe rusts thru though and starts leaking?

10 years or more. But that rusty water will be your major concern. I've had to replace a few black iron nipples on bath spouts before, installed by the homeowner or handymen.
The women folk really dislike the look of brown water coming out of the spout before they take a bath.

A $.53 steel nipple is at stake here, proceed with caution.

very funny!! actually, the threads on galvy nipple coming out of the wall weren't in the best shape, so that's why I screwed on a female coupling to it and then a small nipple, and then attached the spout to it, figuring it would be a little more secure.
I bought one of those universal tub spouts which I know realized are junk, with all their plastic adapters, especially when the threads on the nipple you are attaching them too are not the best shape. thank you again, for all your advice!!

After a few Margaritas, the black nipple might sound like a good idea.

The realtor who sold my first house helped her father in his hardware store. When someone asked for a 3/8 nipple, she slapped him.
