 Toilets overflow
Author: Flanative (FL)

My cond association shut off main water to building. They turn it back on later. A toilet in my cond which I never use ,have two, started to over flow. Can the shutting off of the main water and turning it back on cause my toilet to overflow? Was not home at the time, came home to a flood. What can cause a toilet to overflow when no one used t for six months?

Wet and waiting

better chance of hitting the lottery than of turning water main off/on causing a toilet to overflow.

Turning the water off and on MIGHT cause the toilet valve to turn on and not shut off, but the excess water should have just went down the drain. Therefore, you would have to have had at least two different problems for it to occur

A leaking flapper prior to the water being shut off, followed by water shut down, tank empties/"activates" fill valve, water service returned, incoming water with debris, debris lodges in fill valve, run-on condition with fill valve, toilet 'overflow' incapable of handling all incoming water= flood.

Was tank overflow set to high and water allowed to exit thru flush handle opening when fill valve failed to shut off (due to debris)?

Sorry to read of the damages, but you are not providing us with enough information about the cause of the flooding. Debris in the water would only affect your fill valve. Pictures would help us to help your. What brand of toilets do you have and how old is the plumbing? Was the building built as a condo or is it an old apartment converted into a condo?

Best Wishes

Or with water shutoff all day no one could use their toilet once water is restored everyone flushes at the same time causing an overload to the drain line and it clogs causing an overflow to his unit because he is at the lowest floor?

quote; everyone flushes at the same time causing an overload to the drain line and it clogs causing an overflow

College kids have tried to do this in their dormitories during sports halftimes and have not been able to do it.

Don't know if true or not but following does sound reasonable.

Going back to the 50's - 60's when the ed Sullivan TV show took a commercial break - it was claimed that the water pressure in NY City would drop - from everyone flushing their toilet at the same time. Of course at that time there was probably only 3 TV channels and apparently most were on ed Sullivan.
