My daughter lives in area that allows the sumps to be discharged into the sanitary sewer. In this case, does the sump pump discharge need a trap?

funny but gloucester,ma is spending 10's of millions of dollars to seperate storm water from sewer discharge.
anyway, i'm guessing, yes, it should be treated like any other pumped water such as a dishwasher or washing machine.

Isnt a check valve in that case acting as a trap? Im not a plumber but in our area where pumping to the sanitary sewer is actually recommended, I have never seen a trap????

NO! The sump pump always has water around the bottom of it which is actually a "trap", but it also has a check valve in the discharge which serves the same purpose.

Amazing Hoosierlander! Most communities in Hoosierland have embarked on some kind of program to isolate storm waters from sewer waste. This would include neighborhood sump discharges. Local communities are offering money/assistance to the homeowners in disconnecting sump discharge from the main. Counties throughout Hoosierland are also participating in this program. What part of Hoosierland does your daughter reside?

Best Wishes

yes that is what I was thinking. Would this satisfy plumbing code that all connections to sewer system must be trapped?

YES. In fact a "trap" on the pump's discharge would be completely ineffective and useless.
