Hi,
I have just finished having my main bathroom renovated to make it handicap accessible, paid a contractor, and I am happy with all the work with the exception of now I can hear water through the shower drain when anything else in the house is draining. The washing machine in particular is very loud, but the other shower, toilets flushing, dishwasher and so on, all can be heard through the shower drain. This was never a problem before the renovation, so could someone tell me what was done incorrectly, and how it needs to be repaired?
Thanks

Is there a trap for the shower drain? Was the plumbing work inspected? Has the shower been used since being installed?

The work was just finished friday so I don't believe it has been inspected yet, there does appear to be a trap and the shower has not been used yet as we are waiting to seal the tile first.

If there is a trap in the shower drain, it needs to have water put in it, to provide the odor/noise seal. Take a glass or pitcher and pour at least a pint of water down the drain. Does the shower have a tiled floor? Was a water leak test done, when the pan/membrane was installed?

If you had a reputable contractor there is a trap under the shower, but it is dried out. Pour water down the drain and see if the sound goes away. if it does not, then there is no trap and the contractor is responsible for installing one.

Okay, just sounds like I need to add water, I was not wanting to run the shower until I have the new ceramic tile sealed. I will try adding some from a pitcher and see if that helps, Thanks very much for the advice.

You just finished a few days ago. So I don't think this problem may occured. But you need to recheck again the whole process and just inform your contractor. They are really responsible to make this fulfill.

REsponsible to make WHAT fulfill? The trap does not have any water in it. Is the contractor required to come by every few days and dump some water into the drain until they start using the shower?
