 Elbow fitting threads (female)
Author: Telstar76 (OH)

I recently removed a 1.5" nipple galvanized for my kitchen drain. The elbow, embedded in the wall, seems to have severe thread degradation ( or there is just a lot of very hard rust and corrosion in the female threads). Can I re-thread the fitting in the wall? Is there a better way to handle this? Thank you.

You can take an 1 1/2" pipe tap and chase out the threads and probably be good to go.

It is probably a cast iron fitting so there would be very little usable metal. In addition, the tap would "bottom" into the elbow's turn before it reached the spot where it would redo the threads, unless it was a drainage elbow in which case the "recess" would reject the tap immediately..

I'd try a stiff wire brush in a drill.

Yes...Brass brush, teflon tape and silicone. A one-shot deal.
