 Tub Drain Loosened by Mistake!
Author: baxterdtr (MA)

Complete novice here and made a stupid mistake... Was trying to fix a clog in my fiberglass tub and accidentally loosened the metal silver "O" that surrounds the drain itself (i.e. not sure of the professional name for this part - but it is the flat, circular "O"-shaped metal ring located in every tub around the drain itself). It was slightly loosened about 1/3 of the way around, but not overly loose once I put the screw (inside the hair trap in the middle) back in. I'm afraid that now that it's not completely tight/sealed flush to the tub, it might cause a leak into the condo unit below mine. Is it possible to replace this part easily within the tub - or if not, somehow seal it so that the edge that was loosened does not allow water to leak below the tub? Thanks for any advice you have on how to fix this! Baxter

P.S. this photo is similar to the part I'm referring to (the metal "O" - it might be called a flange. Mine is not cracked, though).

If you turned it 1/3 a turn, I'd about guarantee that it will leak. Whether it was sealed with silicon or plumbers putty, the water tight seal is now broken. It needs to be unscrewed, new putty applied and reinstalled.
