How to remove weird tub drain?
Author: handylady (NY)

I moved to a new house about a month ago, and have been dealing with a tricky tub drain that just won't cooperate and seems impossible to clean. There's a fancy mechanism in there that I've never encountered before, and I'd like to replace it with something newer and simpler to clean. I've attached a picture of the drain; all advice is eagerly welcomed!

The picture is not showing up. I prefer the Watco lift + turn tub waste, they are easy to operate and clean.

Thanks for letting me know -- there might have been some sharing settings wrong with the pic. Tried putting a link instead, hopefully that works to show the picture!
I'm definitely aiming to replace this with a lift and turn drain, I agree they're much easier to deal with and clean!

The top portion of the drain is missing. It appears to be a "toe popper" style drain that was converted from an original trip lever drain. If you can find replacement parts for the trip lever drain, that would be best. The faceplate looks to be a Gerber tub waste.

Is it a cast iron tub that was refinished? and the refinisher did not tape off the overflow cover or the drain strainer?

It looks like a push/pull or lift and turn drain which has been "painted' to the tub, along with the overflow cover. Someone did a "quick and dirty" tub refinish. We would have to be there to see if the drain "plug' will come out so it can be replaced with a new one.

Don't waste your time. By the looks of that refinishing job, you'll be changing the tub, soon.

the tub was junk

it was (I hate to call it that) 'refinished' w/o removing the trim

you got scr*w*d

buy a new tub for peace of mind

or find out from the previous owner who did that horrendous refinish job and post the name and and picture here and anywhere else you can. it might help drive that person/company out of business.
as others have said, that job is awful...

IT was probably a do-it-yourself job using refinishing kit from a "big box store".
