The Richmond is about 50.00 more than the Whirlpool...any real diff in the two....The Whirlpool is from Lowes..the benifit there is I can return it if I have any issues...may also be able to find a 10% off coupon

Neither one is a "manufacturer". Whirlpool is by American water heaters and Richmond is by Rheem/Ruud, (which by the way is also the GE heater sold by Home Depot). For all practical purposes ALL electric heaters are basically the same. They all buy their components from the same source, so the only difference is the metal tank itself. Go for price.

does 'ge' still make a 40gal with the element indicator lights?
my WH is 2001 and has a small EXTERNAL 'glow bulb' type indicator by each element
I have found these indicators to be very very handy

I haven't seen any, but then I am not familiar with their entire line. Some of the "better" units with longer warranties could have them. However, the light only tells you that the element SHOULD be working, not if it is.
