We need a new water heater. I like the tried and true storage tank type, but my wife keeps mentioning tankless water heaters.
I think a good tankless water heater costs a lot more than storage tank water heaters. I've heard it can take 20 years of energy saving to make up the difference in the costs.
A plumber who came here said if we went tankless the venting system would have to be totally changed. He said they are mostly vented out the side of the garage and that we'd have to plumb water and electrical away from where the storage tank water heater is to the other side of the garage. A lot of trouble considering the garage is totally loaded with stuff.
What are your opinions on the advantages of tankless water heaters? Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
Thanks.

Place a piggy bank next to the tankless and put all the money saved during the first 7 yrs. in the bank because the next 7 yrs. are going to use it up.

check out the size wire you will need to run a whole house tankless..
also, if you move the heater to the other side of the garage, that is all the further the hot water will have to travel. recirc needed?

1. GAS tankless do not use a big electric wire
2. Electric tankless do not have a vent
3. The tankless can be installed where the storage type heater is now, but you need the proper size gas line to it, and you will have to redo the vent. But it CAN go out the roof the same as the current one does.
4. If I were to go tankless, and I did not when I changed my heater a few months ago, it would be one with a "preheater" coil is the flue passage.

I have a Rennai tankless and I love it. We have a propane tank with ours (in the country) which feeds the Rennai and our gas stove. It is mounted OUTSIDE so venting isn't a problem. It has thermostat that we control on the wall in the bathroom. The only electricity is uses is for the thermostat. It takes about 30 to 50 seconds for hot water to start once you turn on the faucet. The biggest benefit is being able to have all the hot water you need. We have guests quite frequently and with 6 people taking a shower one right after another and running two showers, everyone has hot water. The cost is rather high compared to a hot water heater and, if you only look at ROI,it won't give you a quick return. I look at the comfort it provides and a lower electric bill.

The only way you would have a lower electric bill would be if you had an electric water heater previously. IF so, now you have a higher propane bill.
