Motion Sensor Critter Sprayer Backflow Prob?
Author: Fixitangel (NC)

Here's my head-scratcher: A guy calls and says the supply pipes make a noisy chatter in the master bath sometimes. After some detective work, I find that he has hooked up 100' of garden hose from an outside silcock (which is plumbed off the bath supply line) to a motion-activated garden sprayer to deter animals from digging in the vegetable garden. What happens is; when the silcock is opened to the garden sprayer AND I turn the faucet(s) on slowly on the Roman tub, there is a certain point where the vaccum breaker on the silcock "chatters" because the static pressure held in the garden hose exceeds the inlet pressure due to the pressure drop caused by the tub faucets. Has anybody else had this problem? I totally rebuilt the silcock, new seals, new vaccum breaker, etc. No good. The chatter goes away when the silcock is closed. Do you think an in-line backflow preventer at the silcock will fix this issue?

PS. I would not have a motion activated sprayer. In addition to the aformentioned issue, I don't like the idea of a 100' garden hose pressurized in the summer 24-7. Pop goes the hose and spin goes the meter. Could be alot of $$$ if they were on vacation. surprised

Make the same explanation to the h/o as you did to us.

If you got a stiffer hose that would not "Expand" when it was pressurized, it would minimize, if not eliminate, the sound. IT is a common problem when people just close the hose nozzle to stop the flow.
