Shower/Tub handle turns and turns but no water
Author: rwhirley (TX)

Hello,
I have a single shower/tub handle. I have no idea what brand it is as there is no name on it. It was installed prior to us buying this house. I have had problems with it in the past and I had it fixed by 2 different plumbers. I asked the last plumber to show me how to fix it so I could fix myself without having to pay every time. When it isn't working the handle gets loose and you have to put pressure on the handle when turning to get the water to come on and then it just falls back down to the off position. It started doing this again so I popped the piece off and went to tighten the screw inside but no water would come on. The screw would be very tight but then the handle just keeps turning and turning. Could it be the handle? Could the thread be stripped? I was told by someone that in order to replace the shower handle the wall would have to be ripped out but I don't believe this for a second. Ive watched numerous videos on youtube where the whole thing can be replaced
TIA
Renay

it would be a pretty unusual circumstance that required the wall to be opened up to change a handle or a cartridge.
post a picture here of the valve and handle and help will be on the way..

I bought a replacement handle (I have no idea what brand but I think Moen) and still not working. I am thinking the valve stem is stripped on the outside but I don't know how to remove this

The rotating diverter lever would often indicate that it is a "Danze" faucet. but neither photo shows what we need to see to make a determination.

From the picture, the cartridge appears to be okay, but the description implies that the handle is stripped.
