Removal of external vertical bathtub drain stopper
Author: CamilleNYC (NY)

Hi. I live in an old NYC apartment building, and my bathtub has an external vertical drain stopper tube - a chrome tube next to the tub that's about 18 inches high and has a metal part inside that drops down to plug the tub and lifts to drain it. I want to replace my ancient pedestal sink with a modern cabinet, but the drain stopper tube is in the way. Can it be removed safely? Any tips or tricks? I have no problem with using a simple rubber drain stopper instead, btw.

Depending on how "tight" the slip nut thread is, and whether it is a standard pipe thread instead of a fine thread, a pipe cap can be screwed on top of the tee.

get a cabinet made with a hole in the base so you can set it down over the drain stopper

simply leave it open and use a plug in the tub

you will / may need access in the future

Thank you both. My super is sure he can get it to work one way or another and he mentioned both possibilities. Getting a cabinet to go around the column and fit in my typically tiny NYC bathroom is a very tight fit but I'll see what I can find.
