bathroom sink repair - "wall tube"?
Author: molederek (VA)

I'm looking for help repairing my bathroom sink, which I recently broke by accidentally pulling it out from the wall. The J-trap snapped off from the pipe coming out from the wall (hereafter, perhaps incorrectly, referred to as the "wall tube" ). Replacing the drain and J-tube would seem to be a straightforward problem, but the problem is that the wall tube is too damaged/worn out to fit the new trap onto.

I need to remove the wall tube so I can replace it, but I don't see a way to do this. You can see the wall tube in the attached picture. I can't get any grip to attempt to twist the washer type disc between the tube and the wall, and I actually managed to break the wall tube (this damage is not pictured) when I attempted to twist it. Can anyone let me know what I should do to remove what I am calling the wall tube or what I should do? Thanks.

You need to remove the bell escuchen so that you can see what method was used for connecting the tube to the wall pipe. Usually its just a metal slip nut and washer. If so just unscrew or break the nut. A new p-trap will come with new nuts and washers.
If it happens to be sweated in place it is a bit more difficult to repair.

i'm guessing it is sweated into 1 1/2 copper tubing.
easy job for a plumber, not so easy for a homeowner.
