Ok how many amps does an 80 gallon wh draw...Its on a 30 amp breaker so I know its not 30 amps..
The tag says 3700 watts...looking online it looks like 18 amps ?
My question is this...I need to replace my electric WH sometime soon...I have a 100amp service in my home...all breakers...my current WH is on a day/night meter and is 80 gallons...it runs off a third leg on my meter so no timer...it only comes on from 11pm to 7am....
I am thinking about going to a 40 gallon on a regular meter as there are only 2 of us here...
Currently have:
central ac
electric range
electric dryer
electric WH
so in the RARE event they were all on at once...would they draw over the 100 amps ?
I believe my ac is on a 20amp 220 breaker, wh is on a 30, dryer is on a 30 and I think the range is also on a 40...

You're going to have to ask a "sparky" that question. They have calculations they go by.Also, things like hair driers and toasters draw fairly high amps, relative to their size.

You have an 80 gallon heater because it has to store enough hot water to get you through the day until it turns on again at night. Normally, it would have 4,500 watt elements, but since it is operating when there is little usage, the 3,850 ones just take a little longer to fill the heater. DO NOT go with a 40 gallon heater. A 50 gallon one is about the same price and both will heat the water exactly the exactly the same, but cost more because they are not on a regulated time period.

Dont they usually develop a small leak to start with ?? I have a floor drain right next to it...I have changed 2 elements and cleaned the tank out both times...we are on city water..pretty soft

quote; Dont they usually develop a small leak to start with
To quote a very wise person, "The race is not always to the swift or the battle to the strong, but that is a good way to bet". To answer your question, USUALLY, and that is the safe way to bet, but sometimes they do fail precipitously without warning.
