 Old Sayco Stems
Author: Moonkat24 (GA)

I am replacing old Sayco plumbing parts in an old condo. I cannot get the stem removal tool to stay tight/firm around the inner nut for all 3 stems. It keeps slipping the connection. There is lots of corrosion around the nuts so I put some liquid wrench/liquid blaster but nothing moves and the stem removal tool keeps slipping. All of this hardware is inside the tile cut outs. Am I going to have to remove part of the tile to get a better grip on the nuts?

Be sure the valves are in the open position or things may bind up so it won't turn. You can pinch a shower socket down a bit with adjustable pliers so it fits tighter.

I can't seem to turn the stems to see if they are open. However, I turned my water back on & the shower/diverter is open bc the shower is on. I wish I could post pics here so it would be better understood? Any suggestions on how to do that?

YOu need a wrench that fits the stem better, possibly a 1/2" square drive deep socket, even if you have to turn it with a pipe wrench.

There's a yellow banner, near the top of every page of this forum, with instructions on posting a photo.
