Replacing upstairs bathtub drain. Bathtub sits upon joists above downstairs master bathroom. Have very little space/room to work. To install a p-trap would require cutting hole into downstairs ceiling. Do I need to install p-trap if I have air vent installed off a tee above main drain?

Yes you need the P trap in order to keep sewer gases from entering the home. A P trap creates a liquid seal to keep the gases out.

There is enough room to fit the trap within the depth of framing members. If you are talking about access, that's a different story. You have to do whatever is necessary to do the job correctly. Sewer gas is not a pleasant aroma.

You DO need a trap, and the "vent" if that is what it is, has NOTHING to do with the need for a trap, although the trap WILL need a proper vent, but the one you are referring to may NOT be a 'proper' vent.

If you do not know how to install and connect to the "P" trap without making a hole in the downstairs ceiling, call a plumber who does.
