 Sump discharge and burial depth
Author: mwr (IN)

I live in Chicagoland (freezes). How far down should I bury a sump pump discharge?

It would exit the house 3' from ground level and immediately change to 2" pipe and drop down to the ground level. At that point I am afraid I will only be able to bury 1' to 2'. Am I setting myself up for freezing trouble?

Also any suggestions on how to configure the outlet is appreciated....

As long as you install it so the water drains out of the pipe, it will not freeze.

Good enough, but I am leary about the discharge end... If I only go a 1' or 2' surely it will freeze on the discharge end....

what would be a standard install in freezing climate?

So do I have to go below frost line then?

And what is the best way to setup the discharge end.... do I bring it back to ground level? Or when it hits the ground do I use a perforated material?

I need some help getting this done... I have it all planned for the interior, its the exterior that I am having trouble figuring out.

Part of the problem is that my water softener and laundry also drains into the sump. So if it was just ground water, it probably wouldn't even be flowing in freezing temperatures.... however, it takes sump and laundry.
