Loud drain noise after sump pump discharges - Help!
Author: km218 (IL)

I have a raised ranch home with well/septic. It was built around 1970. The bathroom is upstairs, right above the sump pump in the basement that is for the laundry tub and drain tile. I installed a new 1/2 hp sump pump after the old sump pump failed. I do not know what size the old pump was. I also installed a check valve as they did not have one. The discharge pipe is 9 foot and ties into a large pipe coming from the upstairs bath that drains out to the septic. Now, every time the sump pump discharges, there is a really loud sucking noise coming from the drain in the tub. The noise is ridiculously loud, especially at 3 am! What do I need to do to fix it?

Thank you for any ideas.

if you could post a picture or two of the connection from the pump into your drain line, that would be helpful.
i find it hard to believe the toilet drain is not vented. it most likely vents full size right thru the roof.

the sump drain entering the toilet drain that far away should have no impact on the tub drain if the toilet drain is vented.
it would take an awful lot of force to syphon out THAT tub trap.
i'm kinda thinking you may have a partial stoppage downstream of the point where the sump pump ties into the toilet drain ??? in that case the flow from the pump would cause a slight backpressure but that backpressure should go harmlessly up the toilet vent. (the tub is not vented).
as you can tell, diagnosing over the internet is sometimes a BIG guessing game..
good luck.

So the pipe to the left of the drain is the overflow? So I need to vent the tub? Would an
AAV work?
