 toy flushed down toilet
Author: Pinetree (MD)

We live on the 2nd floor of a 3 story building. Our toilet still flushes but when our upstairs neighbors uses their toilet it seems to come out of our toilet and also causes black stuff to come out of the bathtub drain.

Coincidentally, our building is having the main drain pipes cleaned next week. Based on the research I've done so far online, I kind of see these as my options:

1. Try using a plunger to get the toy out. I haven't tried yet because I need to go out and buy one.
2. Try using a toilet snake. Would I be trying to push the toy down or trying to hook it and get it out?
3. Don't do anything until they clean the main drain and see if that fixes the problem.

Any thoughts or other suggestions welcome. Some additional info in case its helpful are that the water level in our toilet has been low and the tub drains slow (both were true before the toy got flushed).

if the toilet (water closet) in question flushes OK an auger or plunger will do NOTHING

I would wait

do nothing to your toilet until the main line is cleaned.

If the upstairs toilet is backflowing into your tub and toilet, the stoppage is too far for a plumber or toilet auger to do any good.

Thanks for the responses! We're happy to wait until the main drain is cleaned.

Depending on how the piping was installed, clearing the main drain may NOT clear a stoppage on the second floor.
