ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, a type of plumbing drainage material. In the practical sense, it is a pipe that when cut, the pipe material 'melts', thereby locking up your saw blade. When glued, it allows no more than 2 seconds 'working' time; any more time than that and your joint is ruined. Just use PVC.

Easy to say, not so easy to do. In many areas, such as here, the supply companies carry one or the other, not both, so you install whichever they carry. ABS is a pipe material currently used for drainage, but at one time also for water and gas lines. As an aside, PVC does not give you any more time to "adjust" the connection before it seizes, and I can cut ABS with my saw as fast and easy as I can PVC.

In the 50's and 60's, ABS was used to make potable water pipe under the name of 'Kraylastic' and it also used solvent weld fittings.
