 basement floor drain backup
Author: bbanks (OH)

Water that appeared to be clean/clear backed up through my basement floor drain last night. The water backed up and flooded the entire basement with about 2 inches of standing water.

No sump pump and not a septic system. In the 8 years I've been in the house, only one backup through the floor drain about 7 years ago and that was just a puddle forming around the drain from blockage. Fixed that by renting electric auger.

About an hour after discovering the flood, the water drained out without any plumbing work. It didn't drain out slowly, but drained fast as though a stopper was opened on a drain.

No heavy rains in the area.

Any ideas on why the water backed up through the floor drain?

Why did water drain so fast instead of slowly like a blockage?

Could be a couple scenarios. Either your main line leaving the house temporairily stopped up and then released, or the city main stopped up and backed into your basement and then cleared (although not as likely as the first).

I was thinking something like that, but the water was so clean and clear.
