 Draining Water Softener
Author: ddmnh (NH)

Hello. The advice I've received is not to drain a water softener to the septic system. The location where I would plan to drain is about 10 feet from the house to the woods.
For those living in a cold location (I am in New Hampshire) how do you handle this drainage? Do you have pipe that discharges onto the ground? Do you have a pipe buried? If so how deep? Do you have a dry well?

Thanks for your time.

You will probably want the assurance that you will not experience any freezing of the drain line in the winter. That precludes anything on the surface of the ground. Subsurface draining will require a drywell.

What are your neighbors doing? For the long term.... a dry well will be needed.
How much water does your system use during a cycle?

Best Wishes

Who gave that advice? I have been draining my softeners to my septic tanks for over 35 years, and "millions" of others in this area are doing the same. We do not notice any degradation of the septic systems by doing so.

Hello. The code officer in my town strongly recommended that I not drain to the septic system. My friend who owns a plumbing supply company said she hears a lot of stories of septic issues caused by water softener draining. How deep should the pipe be laid going to the dry well?

Thanks for your review.

Low enough so it does not freeze closed if the dry well is flooded so that the water stays in the pipe. But, then, since there will not be a "vacuum relief" on the line, it will probably always stay full of water anyway.
