 flushometer quality of flush
Author: Amy (NY)

We just completed the renovation of 2 bathrooms. In the master bathroom we replaced our old toilet with a Toto and we are very pleased with its functioning. In the children's bathroom, we had a very old flushometer style toilet that had what must have been the best flush in town. We wanted to keep it but the plumber told us that the old flushometer was incompatible with something in the new piping, so he replaced it with a Zurn flushometer. Now we have the worst flush in town. My children don't want to even use it. Flushed toilet paper frequently comes back up, shredded. For a little more than what the new flushometer cost, we could have had a brand new Toto toilet. (Had we realized how well the new toilet would work, and it wasn't even expensive, we would have done this from the beginning-- we just assumed a flushometer would be better). Advice welcome!

They used a Flushometer for a new toilet which was incompatible with your toilet. There is NOTHING in the system that was NOT compatible with the old flush valve, or even a new "proper" one. The plumbers "sold you a bill of goods".

Flushometers must be matched to the toilet they are serving, otherwise, you will have poor results as you have noted.

I agree with HJ. Even if your old flush valve was a 3.5 gpf and you had a 1.6 gpf toilet. All you would have to do is change the internal kit. Someone was trying to impress you with BS. Your Flushometer uses a diaphragm. The Toto uses a piston assembly.

Best Wishes

Zurn flushometers are clones of Sloan so the parts are interchangeable.
