My husband and I recently bought a house and discovered, while washing clothes and running the dishwasher simultaneously, that we have a tree root growing through out sewer pipe. Now, being new home owners we don't exactly have the funds to replace the pipe just yet. Now, my question is that a friend came over and accidentally flushed a tampon. I've used the toilet since but am afraid to use the washing machine or dishwasher now. Is it safe or should I call out a plumber before using the washing machine or dishwasher.

A good plumber or drain cleaing pro can clear the root from your drain pipe; call one ASAP. It's a temporary fix but it will "buy" you some time until you can have the break in the pipe properly repaired. In the meantime, just don't use everything at the same time.

yeah, have the pipe professionally cleaned and use a chemical root killer to minimize roots growing back.

Just how did you discover that you had root invasion in a recent purchase ??? And you discovered this by using both washing machines at the same time. I'm surprised that this issue was not revealed by the home seller, before you signed for the sale.
I'm sure that a Licensed Plumber with the right equipment can resolve most issues..... but what is the issue?
Best Wishes

Tree roots do NOT always mean a broken pipe. They are pernicious and will find any small opening to grow through, and then increase in size once they are in the sewer. A plumber with a proper cutter can remove the growth. They WILL return, however, but unless it happens quickly, most customers just have them removed periodically, when they cause a problem, rather than replace the sewer pipe. As for your question, If there are existing roots in the sewer, the tampon MIGHT have gotten caught in them, but if that happened, it would not automatically mean that everything would back up. Use the appliances and see what happens. If they do not drain properly, THEN call the plumber.

Gurgling drains are usually an indicator of main line blockage. If you drain the tub, and hear gurgling in the sink....call someone.
