We had to pump out the septic and the old outflow pipes/field were no good so we dug a whole new line and field. Attached to the pipe outflow and nothing worked. Digging a little around the outflow pipe we had attached to we found another pipe about 6" below the one we attached to! Opening the lid, we found the first pipe extends past the 2nd chamber across the top. What is that? Now we have to redig and uncover it all.....?

Need some history, how long have you been in the house, is this a new problem or not. More background is needed. Meanwhile sounds like someone tried to lay some new pipes and fields before you?

A box with a lid would imply a distribution box, but we cannot tell what it is from your description.

Pictures are better than words here. Septic systems have the line from your house, a holding tanks, distribution box and evaporation fields. Different areas of the country will design their systems differently, based on the terrain and the ability to drain the system.

I'm not sure if you are referring to the holding tank, or the distribution box. I hope you are using professionals to service your system. Otherwise, their mistakes will continue to cost you in your attempts to restore your septic system.

How old is your septic system?
Best Wishes
