I just want to say that I've been a longtime lurker of this forum & you guys are great help.



A family member & me are having a problem installing my hot water heater. We got it in and connected everything but there is ONE thing: a small leak where at the top near the adapter. I dont know what exactly this adapter is called so I could not look it up, & I am having a hard time taking it off.

Any solution or help in how to stop this little leak would be appreciated.


I bought it used from a friend who was selling his house, its only 3 years old. I am a little strapped at the moment, or else I would have bought a new one.

that is a pipe thread X solvent weld adapter fitting

you will need a solvent weld (glue) coupling for the tube above the fitting as the tube will have to be cut then coupled back together

the adapter needs to be replaced as the glue end can NOT be repaired

then the tube above gets reconnected with the coupling + a short 'filler' piece

if you have some 'give' in the piping you can cut flush to the adapter and reinstall w/o the coupling

about 35 cents for the coupling, $1-2 for the adapter, + $2-4 for the glue and primer

buy the smallest cans you can get as it has a limited shelf life after opening

better check local codes. in MA, plastic pipe is not allowed within 18 inches of a water heater.
must use metal and transition at the legal distance.

Packy- gas, yes. But even on electric?

Water heater flex with a built in gatorbite on the end. That would take about 1 minute to make the repair. No glue, no drying time, code approved, etc.

m&m, yes, even on electric. even on superstor as well.
first 18 inches of pipe (cold or hot) must be metal.

Electric heaters get just as hot as gas ones.
