 water sound in pipes
Author: sunlin (NY)

I have very loud running water sounds going through my pipes throughout the day. It is not related to whether the faucet or any water using appliance is on. Its VERY loud. Almost like a water fall sometimes. I can hear it from every room in the house but most noticeable in the bathroom and bedroom. This is a new thing since winter. Is this something I have to worry about? Im sure its just the water running throughout the pipes to heat the house but it is SO loud. it was never this loud before. SHould I worry?

shut off your water meter to see if the sound stops.
if it does stop then i would look at the toilet/s to make sure they are not constantly trying to refill.
if it does not stop then you could have air in the heat pipes. check this by turning off the main switch for the heating system. if that stops the noise then either you or a heating company has to purge the air from the system.
so, if the noise is from the heat i would not worry. it is an annoyance but not dangerous.
if the noise is from the water piping, i would worry about the water bill being significantly higher due to the water being wasted.

If it turns out to be the heating system, you might want to talk to a heating company about installing something to remove the air automatically. It's not that expensive and can save you from a no heat situation, on say, Christmas Eve ( Murphy's Law).
