 Loose Diverter Tub Spout
Author: Adamj (MS)

My brother just purchased a new house and one of the bathrooms has a tub spout that moves when the diverter valve is raised up or down.

It appears to be tight on the pipe and I'm concerned about damaging something if I try to get another turn out of it to secure it against the wall.

Anyone know a fix for this? Is it possible to get some type of spacer to make the spout tight against the wall?

Really appreciate any help.

Adam

2 kinds of spouts...
one has a threaded end and screws onto a nipple.
other has an "O" ring, slides over a pipe and is secured by a set screw on the bottom.
without knowing which you have and just what is wrong it is hard to advise.

Price Pfister makes a chrome plate that goes behind the spout, it'll set the spout out about 5/16", that should work if your spout is threaded.

Cant find a model name on the spout. I did access inside the wall and braced the supply line to stop movement of the spout.

I still want to replace the spout as the diverter valve is malfunctioning. The spout does not have a set screw and the line its on appears to be plastic. I tried turning the spout to loosen it, and it will not budge. I feel like I'm close to the breaking point of the plastic line. I have no idea how to proceed from here and would appreciate any advice.

Does water come out of the shower, no matter if you use the diverter, or not?

Yes, water comes out when the tub faucet is on. About 1/10 of the flow, the shower works just fine when the diverter is on shower.

That's because someone didn't read the directions, and used pex to the spout.
