 hot water heater warranty
Author: connvalley (CT)

I purchased a Reliance "stay Kleen Lifetime heater (made by State Heater) in 1992 and it's now March 2014 which makes it 22 years old. I have a water filter on the cold water in line coming from a well and I drain the heater each spring for maintenance. The lifetime warranty which I submitted years ago covered a couple thermostat replacements that were damaged by power surges from T-storms and I paid $400 for the heater in 1992. That was a lot of money back then but the only problem I have now is the faucet drain is leaking and the in/out plumbing top connectors are rusting. I decided to replace the heater with a 6 year warranty Richmond heater which is made by Rheem and the plumbing supply store said "wow" filtering the water made a big difference in why it lasted so long plus my well water is from a spring which didn't have any corrosive effects on the tank. You are paying extra for an extended warranty and the heater is the same tank. Look at it as a extended car warranty, you pay extra and the company hopes nothing goes wrong. When I had called State Heater for parts which they shipped free, I asked if they get a lot of people calling in and I was told most people never submit the warranty to the manufacturer no matter if it was a 6 or 12 year warranty. Be sure to submit your warranty!

I recently replaced some Montgomery ward and sears water heaters from the early 70's. You are really lucky if you can get ten to 15 years nowadays and if you buy from the box stores you are lucky to 7. I miss the days of a company actually trying to make a product last. The house that had the Montgomery ward also had a garbage disposal at least 40 years old that went out 3 weeks after the heater did.

quote; garbage disposal at least 40 years old that went out 3 weeks after the heater did.
I can almost guarantee that the disposer SHOULD have been replaced "decades" ago. Just because it "runs", and doesn't leak, does not mean it is "working correctly".

just because a heater can last that long does not mean you really want it to stay that long. efficiency is lost over time, not to mention strides that have been taken to make them even safer and more efficient.
