Hi there -
Our sump pump in the basement bathroom stopped working because there was a rag stuck in the rotors. Now it needs to be replaced. The tenant insists that she did not flush the rag down the toilet even though no one has access to the bathroom other than her. My question is, is it possible that the rag has been there for a while but only recently caused the clog?
Thanks,
Alex

It is possible that the rag was in the receptor for a time before it was pulled into the pump and became lodged.

I spoke to the plumber and he said there's no way it has been in there for a while because it's heavy and would have gotten pushed down into the rotor. It also would have been filthy if it was in there for a while. It looked newer still. Tenant still denies it. :/

Tenants always deny everything.
Good thing you can always raise their rent next time the lease expires to make up for it, if this is a battle you really want to win.
