For the life of me I can't find the correct term to use, but I know you guys will be able to help me.
I need to replace a toilet & its stop valve. The stop is multi turn, corroded, etc. I want to put a 1/4 turn ball on it.
The toilet supply comes from the wall, so it's an angle stop. The valve is the chrome type with the chrome polished pipe integrated with it. What's that called?
Can I cut the valve off the chrome stub and sweat on a new one, or do I need to cut all the way back to the unpolished copper in the wall?
Oh, and just to be sure, this is not a chrome nipple. The old stop is permanently attached to the stub.

Yeah, I didn't know what to call it so I couldn't search for a pic.
Finally figured it's a chrome stub-out, similar to the one Packy added in [www.plbg.com]
Only mine is older, and a multi turn, not a 1/4 turn ball valve.

it is called an angle sweat stop with extension.
you need to remove the entire valve and extension in one piece.
turn off your water, remove the handle and stem assembly by loosening the packing nut.
this will allow the valve to drain. heat the valve and inch or so away from the handle end. it should melt the solder at the wall end of the extension. twist it loose and pull it towards you.
wipe the copper tube clean of all solder and you will be good to go.

And if all that sounds too complicated and technical, get a SharkBite compression angle stop and push it over the pipe.

Thanks guys. I'll probably go back into the wall, put in a drop-ear ell, and then come out with a new chrome nipple for aesthetics and to make future valve replacement easier.

I had so little room to work that I ended up removing the old valve w/extension, and sweat on a male adapter close to the wall. Then just installed the threaded 1/4 turn valve with a trim ring. Nice flush finish.
