relief vavle on a solar collector for a water heater
Author: lenh (FL)

I have a solar water heater that I purchased 2 years ago. In the last month I noticed water constantly running down my roof to the ground day and night. It looks like it is coming from the end of a pipe at the top of the panel. I think it is the pressure release valve. Can I replace that on my own and if so where to I get the part and what cautions are there. thanks much for help.

I would guess that you are looking at a vacuum breaker, if so just make sure the pump isn't running, unscrew the old one and screw in a new one. A good plumbing supply store should have them in stock.

A typical solar panel in FL, that is an open loop type, (potable water open to the tank) will have a pressure relief valve, an air vent, a freeze valve and possibly a vacum breaker. Is there any way to post a pic of which valve is leaking. Also, make sure the pump is circulating and heat transfer is occuring as that can be a cause of the valve actuating. You indicate that the system is only 2 years old?
