Not a Caroma OR a Toto?????
Author: Rick Laser (CA)

I'm the guy again whose son has large stools. I found out Caroma toilets might be hard to get so on your advice I contacted Toto about the Drake II and Ultramax II. I received the below from one of the Toto tech guys. I'm back to square one.

"Thank you for taking the time to contact us as we value your decision of choosing TOTO".

"The Drake II or Ultramax II are strong flushes and meet your criteria. The main issue is the size of the waste. If they are large, and hard, you will have issues of consistent clogging. The trapway of the bowl twists and turns".

they all twist and turn because they have integral trap.

Rick....You will not find any manufacturer that will state in writing that your sons meatloaves will categorically not clog their toilet. Buy a quality toilet, that tests well, and beyond that, you are going to have to teach the lad how to unclog a toilet. It is more than likely the combination of the meatloaf and the toilet paper that is causing the problem. Have him flush twice, or 3 times depending on how much of the "side of beef" he's consumed.

Thanks. If the Drake II does clog, how hard is it to clear with a plunger?

We have two 23 year old Kohler toilets. Different makes. The one downstairs is easy to clear with a plunger (5 minute job). The one upstairs is a nightmare to clear with a plunger (up to a 20 minute job).

The Toto Sanagloss might make it easier to unclog.

The sanagloss just help keep the bowl clean. Can't answer regarding clearing the drain, as it may be specific to your plumbing. Are those 1st generation 1.6 gpf toilets you have now?

We have 3.5 gallon water wasting toilets from when we bought the house in 1991.

In California we can't buy toilets anymore that use more than 1.28 gallons per flush thanks to our previous Governor Ahhhhnold.

What do you guys think of the American Standard Champion line of toilets?

I gotta be honest with ya......If you can't flush it with a decent 3.5 gpf toilet, you don't stand a chance with a 1.28. IMHO

I live in California and last year installed two new elongated "comfort height" American Standard brand Champion 1.6gpf toilets for my second house (actually my "mancave" ). They both flush ok.

Am I as happy with them as I am with my 3 1/2 year old elongated comfort height Toto Drake 1.6 at my home? Not by a long shot. The Toto Drake in my opinion is a better flushing toilet and I've had no issues or problems with it.

With one of the Champion toilets I had a difficult to fix leak coming from the tank to bowl hole as well as the handle on one of them has stuck a few times and I've had to fiddle with it. The quality of the handle seems to me to be an issue.

The Champion came with a toilet seat (unique way and very easy to install) and was significantly lower priced than the Toto however I regret not having bought Toto toilets for my second house.

I believe should either the Champion or the Drake have a stoppage (hasn't occurred yet) both are easy to clear.

I appreciate all the help!

I might look for a Caroma Sydney again at a different store this time.

Otherwise, I'll get a Drake or a Champion and to hell with the consequences!! wink
