 Cartridge Washer being shredded
Author: gdavej (Non-US)

I've had a problem for some time with washers on a Jameco cartridge being shredded on the bath hot tap. To resolve this, I recently replaced the seat in the faucet (the old seat had a bad notch on it which had been causing the washer to get cut up), and a new washer on the cartridge. I assumed everything was now good, but after only 2 weeks, the washer waas shredded again. I've checked the seat and it is free of any notches, and is still as good as new. This is really puzzling me, can anybody suggest what could be causing my problem?

sand or some other fine debris could harm the rubber washer.

Thanks for the response, I guess I should really clean the inside of the pipe before installing the seat. One thing though.. could it be the hot water that's weakening the washer?, the water is very hot coming out of this tap.

The hot water could be softening the washer enough, that it accelerates the wear. Some washers are available in different hardnesses and a harder washer might help out. How hot is the water?

A 600# gorilla turning it off?

Yes...Seriously...New washer, new seat= light touch. Any pressure beyond what is needed to stop the water, just kills the washer. Single handle valves require even less. I had to show the grandkids, that one finger does the job, just fine.

It sounds like hot water couldn't be the sole cause of the washer being totally shredded after only 2 weeks. One possibility I guess is that there might be some debris still lurking in the pipes from before I changed the seat. I've cleaned the area where the seat is screwed in, but maybe some debris is lurking in the pipe and only shows itself when the water is turned on. Does this sound possible?

Not really. It would be a "stretch" to imagine if anything that could damage the seat would remain in the pipe for any time once the faucet was turned on.
