kitchen sink water going into tub
Author: carrie (CT)

Water from my kitchen sink is backing up into my tub. Toilet, washer, bath sink are not. I have plunged both sink and tub as well as used "draino" max. Still happening. Have tried snaking both also but cant seem to get the snake to the point of the problem. I am a single mom who is willing to fix it myself as the cost of a plumber is not an option for me. Can I get someone with knowledge to give me an idea of what could be causing this and how to fix it? Or a local plumber willing to accept a payment plan?

not meaning to be a smarty but what is causing you problem is a clog. this can be hair, grease or a combination of both.
the solution is to run a snake into the pipe until you reach the clog.
if the toilet is still running freely then that is a good thing. it means you don't have a major problem. yours can be handled by a homeowner with a moderate amount of mechanical skill.
keep snaking as you are. you may be just running the snake thru the clog but not busting it up.

if the cost of a plumber is prohibitive when a relatively minor issue occurs,
how will you afford to fund a potential future 'major' issue such as a new water heater ?
or a 'burst' fitting ?
or a replacement toilet?

you have tried

get a refund for the 'drano'

you will need professional tools and equipment and the knowledge to use them in order to solve your stoppage issue

or hire a plumber

or, to be blunt, move somewhere more affordable in terms of maintenance ~ RENT

Thanks for the reply! Ive tried snaking thru tub and overflow and the curves in the pipes seem to be stopping me from reaching the point of the clog. Im guessing its at the "T" where the 2 run together. Don't know anything about "traps" but if that is an option please advise. Ex is a disabled plumber/pipefitter whom I helped thru apprenticeship so I have a little knowledge on piping. With proper guidance I bet I can do this!!! Thanks for your help!
Keeping the faith!

I think your chances would improve if you tried the snake thru the kitchen drain vs. the tub drain. You are using a power snake we presume?

You can try searching youtube for videos about fixing clogged drains. Draino is a waste of time and money. Operating a snake (even a cheap manual one) requires knowledge of your drain pipe layout.

Sometimes you can bend the end of a snake to make it go where you want it go thru a tee fitting. Sometimes close inspection of your layout will reveal you have "cleanout" fittings that have caps screwed in to allow you snake the pipe in a basement or crawlspace. Sometimes you have to disconnect the slip joint fitings under your kitchen sink to remove the P trap (a little "U" shaped pipe fitting) so you can start snaking from there.

Without seeing or knowing how your system is laid out, it's practically impossible to "guide" you thru the process.

Take the empty Drano Container back to the retailer and get some money back as the Drano did nothing to resolve your clog issue.

Pull the P-Trap on your kitchen sink and use the rodder thru the opening. Depending on the size of your house, 20 feet of cable may not be enough as you have a partition blockage down stream. Maybe your EX can refer you to a good plumber that won't charge you an arm or leg.

Best Wishes

I actually resolved my problem a few days ago and thought Id check back and thank those of you who helped and had faith in me! I ended up snaking thru kitchen sink and screwed up the elbow while putting pipes back together! No biggie, quick trip to local hardware store and about $6.00 I was under that sink! I couldn't run the water to see if I got to the clog until I fixed the pipes! So, no leaks and clog gone! very proud of myself! now I can keep that little nest egg stashed away for the day that "bigger problem" come along! This weekend I will attempt to hang a door on my daughters bedroom! Bet I can!
Thanks again, I may be back someday!
Carrie
