 Pipes Banging
Author: JT (IL)

I'm somewhat of a DIY guy but this one is confusing. Here are the sequence of events:

Dip tube in my hot water heater broke so there were shards of white plastic throughout my hot water pipes, causing low flow. Replaced the tube and got most of the shards out except for my master bathroom shower (shower only, no tub). I changed the cartridge on the shower (it is a Moen but I used a compatible knockoff replacement cartridge) and when I turned the shower back on, still had low flow. Took the cartridge back out and of course, it was full of plastic shards. Here's where it gets interesting. I had the bright idea of turning on the main water without putting the cartridge back into the shower valve, hoping that the pressure would potentially force out any of the remaining old dip tube shards. I let it run for a minute or two, turned the main off, cleaned out the cartridge, and put it back in. Now, when I flush the master bath toilet, I get a banging in my pipes that I didn't have before I changed the cartridge. It must be something pressure related because I also get it when I turn my shower off suddenly, but not when I turn it off slowly. I've drained the water system twice to bleed out the air, but I still get the banging noise. The water flow in my shower is normal now.

Could I have rattled a pipe loose when I turned the main on without the shower cartridge? Like I said, this noise wasn't present before I changed the cartridge or turned the main on without the cartridge in place.

That's exactly what happened. Have someone turn on and off your water while your in the attic so you can hunt it down. This would also be a good time to check the pressure to be sure its not exceeding 80 psi.

Thanks for the feedback, but the problem was the cartridge. I replaced the Damco I bought with a Moen and the banging stopped.

Still would check pipes, they could still be shaking some & just not banging. The issue is enough movement may eventually cause a sudden separation at a joint.
